The Philippines is getting its very own esports school
One need not travel to foreign western lands or even neighboring countries to learn and play at the same time. You only need to go to the Industrial Capital of Southern Philippines. That’s right, it’s been a long time coming, but the Philippines has its very own esports school.
University of The Visayas New School (UVNS) is currently offering esports and game development through their Senior High Arts and Design track.
UVNS, located in Mandaue, is one of the eight campuses of the University of the Visayas.
“We’ll have game strategy for Dota 2 and we will have game design and development animation and 2D and 3D animation, and of course, game creation. After two years, the students can either choose to be game creators, designers, or e-sports players in the professional league,” Genesis Raña, founder and school director of UVNS, told SunStar.
The core subjects for esports is theory, mechanics, strategy and game awareness. Students would also be learning game design, branding, shoutcasting as well as entrepreneurship.

Together with Sunstar Cebu and SM Seaside City, UVNS is set to launch The Domination League, a three-day, P210,000 Dota 2 tournament.
In May 2016, UVNS was recognized by Apple as a distinguished program for innovation, leadership, and educational excellence. 2 months later, Power Mac Center partnered with UVNS.
UVNS will also be providing its students with state of the art gaming equipment. Peripherals from CLiPtec include the Nacrono gaming keyboard, Sauris gaming mouse, and Poison P8 gaming headset. Although PC specifications haven’t been released, we’re sure that UVNS will be equipping students with the latest and greatest hardware, all encased in SilverStone’s PS08 chassis. UVNS is also bringing students the Oculus Development Kit 2 for VR goodness.
